The word “psychiatry” comes from Greek roots and literally means the “medical treatment of the soul.” According to Dr Andrew Weil the basic ideas of integrative psychiatry are:
1. The body has an innate capacity for healing, self repair, regeneration, and adaptation to injury or loss.
2. People are more than their physical bodies. They are also mental/emotional beings, spiritual entities, and members of communities and society. These other dimensions of human life are relevant to health and to the accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of disease.
3. Health and disease result from interactions between genes and all aspects of lifestyle including diet, physical activity, rest and sleep, stress, the quality of relationships, work, etc. Lifestyle choices may influence disease states more than genes and must be a focus of the medical history.
4. The role of the doctor-patient relationship is critical. Throughout history, people have accorded that the doctor-patient relationship, special, even sacred, status. When a doctor sits with a patient and listens with full attention to their story, that alone can initiate healing before any treatment is offered. This relationship has been damaged by contemporary medicine, especially in the United States.
Many physical problems can contribute to a variety of common mental health symptoms such as fatigue, depression, anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome or IBS, sleep problems, aches and pain and problems with concentration and/or memory. Some of the physical problems that can cause these symptoms are: hormone imbalances, problems with mitochondrial energy production, allergies such as gluten sensitivity, problems with absorption from the gastrointestinal system, and chronic infections. Some treatments that may be included in your treatment plan may include psychotherapy, psychiatric medications, bioidentical hormones, nutritional counseling, supplements, lifestyle and diet changes, EMDR for trauma, mitochondrial rehab and detox.
